I helped Monica to show her Siberian husky Noor at the dog show here in Tromø this weekend. She had two more Siberian huskies to show, young Vida and Birk and thus had to have some help, since she couldn't show them all herself. The results were really great, a lot better than we dared to hope for; Birk got his first CK, cert and Best in opposite sex, Vida got Best of Breed (in puppy class) and Noor got Very Good, and second place among the female dogs of the breed. Noor had just shed all of her beautiful winter fur, so she looked a bit like a mix between a husky and a scabies infected fox... But she did very well in the show ring! Vida had a worse time, she was very insecure and stressed, so before the next dog show she will have to practice being in town, meeting dogs and doing things away from the pack, to gain more self confidence. Basically what Noor got when I borrowed her this spring. She did do well under the circumstances though. And we are all proud of her!

There was a really disturbing episode at the dog show. One of those hunter people that think beating the dog is a good idea. This man had a pointer (I think, I was too upset to think about the breed of the dog at the time) and when he thought it didn't behave like he thought it should, he hit it in the face and on the head with his clenched fist! The dog just tried to be as small as possible after this, cowering, wagging the tail and licking its nose, all in an attempt to calm down the owner. People were outraged! Many went up to him and told him he couldn't hit his dog or treat it like that. According to the rules, he should have been forced to leave the show, you are not allowed to abuse the dogs at the dog show, but when this was brought to the secretariat's attention, they only replied that they hadn't seen anything and hence they did nothing about it. I was so shocked! I really thought that beating the dogs into submission was a thing of the past! I am not against using physical touch with a dog, as long as you really know what you are doing and are good at reading dog language, and hence understand what physical touch on different parts of the body means to the dog. But hitting the dog with a clenched fist is not part of dog language and should NEVER be done!

Back to the positive experiences from the dog show. I met a lot of nice people there and there were so many beautiful dogs! I'd like to have one of every breed, but that's impossible.. So I will just have to keep working at the Veterinary center and going to dog shows, so that I get to spend some time with dogs of the breeds I don't have myself :) Below are some of the pictures I took at the dog show.

Tack, är glad att fler tycker som jag om det som skedde. Det är viktigt att sånt här inte tigs ihjäl, utan att vi pratar om det. Det är först när alla pratar om det som vi kan vara säker på att vi kan bekämpa det. Syns det var helt fel att Vibeke sitt inlägg på Facebook blev fjernet! Det är ju där om någon plats som vi ska ha en dialog med klubben och med andra hundmänniskor. Men men, det är som det är, bara det får konsekvenser för både klubben och den skyldige hundägaren så får man väl kanske vara förnöjd. Men vi får aldrig tillåta oss att bli passiva åskådare, vi måste reagera!
DeleteJeg skjønner ikke hvorfor du tror at vi kan bekjempe det med å snakke om det? Og det at de ikke gjorde noe, hvordan vet du det? Sitter du i styret til hundeklubben? Jeg selv var ikke der og kan ikke uttale meg om hva som skjedde annet enn hva jeg har hørt, men jeg synes det er forkastelig å skrive slikt da det går utover hundeklubben.

För det första: Jag var där! Jag såg det! Och det jag menar med att THK inte gjorde något, är att han som slog hunden fick ställa ut hunden trots det han gjort. Han skulle blivit utkastad från utstillingen! Vad THK har gjort i efterhand vet jag inget om och har heller inte uttalat mig om. Blogginlägget skrev jag på söndagen och vad jag vet hade inget gjorts då, eller har jag fel?
DeleteFör det andra: Hvis vi ikke snakker om det så ignorerar vi det ju! Ska vi bara se åt andra hållet och låta folk göra som de vill? Vi har lagar och regler, men hvis folk får göra som de vill ändå så kunde vi ju lika gärna låta bli att ha några regler i det hele tatt. Vad jag vet har Tromsø hundeklubb också regler, är det inte så? Och är inte de reglerna till för att det ska bli bra för både hundar och folk som är med i klubben? Är det då rätt att en del kan bryta reglerna utan att det får någon effekt? Står vissa över lagen? Eller är det bara när din hundklubb framstår i dålig dager som vi ska ignorera regler och lagar och låta folk göra som de vill utan att vi reagerar?
Och i ärlighetens namn, jag såg inte vad hunden gjorde innan den blev slagen, så jag vet inte vad som fick hundägaren att reagera som han gjorde. Men enligt mig så finns det inget den hunden kan ha gjort som rättfärdiggör att den skulle bli slagen! Om du anser att det att slå hundar är en bra metod så får det stå för dig, det är inte en metod jag ställer mig bakom, oavsett vad hunden har gjort!
Jag har inget emot THK, jag känner många som är aktiva där och vet att det är bra folk. Det enda jag ville komma fram till är att det är förkastligt att slå hundar och att om vi inte gör något för att hindra att det händer igen så är vi lika skyldiga som den som slår.

Det jag valt att göra är att få folk uppmärksamma på att det fortfarande idag finns folk som slår sina hundar, och att vi måste slå ner hårt på de som gör det för att visa att det inte är OK. Att tiga ihjäl det är inte ett alternativ.
